Description
An account of the resource
Elizabeth writes from New York to her son Fredric, a reverend in Hadley. She writes about the recent death of her other son, Edward, who was only in his 30s. In her letter she copies down some of Edward's writings, which were found by her husband, Dan. The passages she copies from Edward's papers contain Edward's resolutions and reflections in response to the death of his brother John Whiting. Quite a powerful circle of mourning and remembrance--and inspiration for right living.

Description
An account of the resource
Elizabeth writes to her 17 year-old daughter Mary while she is away at school. There seems to be some concern about Mary's health or happiness and Elizabeth seems willing to have her return home and study with her brother William if she prefers. Elizabeth sympathetically recalls her own unhappiness when away from home as a girl. The rest of the letter is full of family and town news with special attention to the family's horses and to the antics of baby Frances. She writes about church describing the music of the church organ and the content of a recent sermon. She ends with a postscript written in French--a language Mary was probably learning in school. Elizabeth planned to send the letter by post, but instead sends it with a man going west to sell hats.

Elizabeth is writing to John Whiting and wishes to buy a copy of Taylor Born’s “Faith of Pity.” She then claims that it is not the duty of the ministers to publicly make intercession for the prayers of the masses. Elizabeth proceeds to provide Whiting a health update of various family members, and closes the letter with a testament to the mercy and glory of God.

This is a letter from mother to child, where Elizabeth updates her son John of her husband’s hopefully growing interests in becoming a preacher. She also informs him of different family matters, including who is visiting, and relays the contents of letters from other family members. Lastly, Elizabeth alludes to a broken little society and the prospective formation of a new one (of this, I assume she is referring to town community gatherings, perhaps for select people). Elizabeth makes many religious references, referring to the power God has over their lives.

Elizabeth writes to her son John in response to letters that he has written her. She first declares that Charles Thompson from Philadelphia is the author of the “Commentary on Translation”, which another man named Mr. Smith recommended reading. She goes on to say that she recently attended a conference with her husband in Salem. Where another attender notes that she ought to have been invited to preach. She reports on a successful conversation with her child, Bethia. Elizabeth goes on to highlight other developments in the family and her pride in her children. Frederic is driven by academics. They were worried he wouldn’t like school, but now wish he was around the house more often. She concludes by saying that she apologizes for not receiving his messages sooner. Short notes are added to the letter by Mary, Bethia, Frederic and Dan Huntington

An account of the resource
In the letter, Elizabeth addresses a letter she had received from her son, John, a few days prior. In that letter, he had discussed his desire to win College honors, but had not received this prize, for which he was greatly disappointed. Elizabeth reminds John that “worldly distinction” should not be his main goal in life and references many passages from the Bible to prove her point. The second half of the letter is comprised of updates of the town and family: John’s uncle left for Boston the previous week, his father preached in another town, Elizabeth went to hear another man’s sermon in Northampton, etc. She ends her letter by speaking of the health of the town—many townspeople are “sick with fever” and “death is making ravages” through the town. Luckily, the whole family is in “comfortable health.”

This letter is your typical letter from your mother updating her child of what is new at home. Here we see Elizabeth Huntington update Whiting about what is happening at home: the store is going through some modifications, Elizabeth and Miss Vanderkemp of Trenton wrote to the family, and Elizabeth Whiting Phelps Huntington is still suffering from her stomach illness. The topic of faith and the practice of faith is also very present in this letter, as seen through Elizabeth’s approval of fasting. It is interesting to see how the talk of God is just as normal as sending Whiting his shirts the next week. Additionally, it is quite clear to see Elizabeth is a mother with how she writes about her children being in school and how Mary was preparing to leave home for school and the use of “Pa and I.” Something else that is interesting to note is the use of quoting in this letter. There are two instances in which a text is referenced: the popular phrase from the book of James in the bible of “do unto others what you want done upon you” and a quote from the poem “Night Thought” by Edward Young.

This letter begins with Elizabeth mentioning Edward’s birthday and discussing how everything in this life, like business and pleasure, is undeserving of genuine concern unless it stems from religion. She then goes on to discuss how she saw Edward on Saturday and that he was in “good health and spirits.” Edward brought John cloth for his coat. She then proceeds to tell John that his father is sick with a swelled face but is continuing to live his life. She then updates him on other people and ends the letter because her paper is full, and says that she wants to hear from him soon.

In this letter from Elizabeth Huntington to John Whiting Huntington, she writes quickly to avoid delaying Charles Porter Phelps from going to the post office. She requests something from him, and acknowledges a different letter John had sent the family a week prior. She mentions William’s progress in school, and gives brief updates on Bethia and Mary as well as a few others. Elizabeth concludes the letter by requesting John to respond soon and reminds him to stay warm.
