CHASED BY INDIANS
In two chapters Chap 2
All at once a thought came to him he dropped to the ground noislesly and waited. He reached out his hand for some leaves, he cot some and dropped them over him just then they looked round they noticed him but thinking him a log turned round again Hiram slid on his back pushing with his legs he got over the ground noislesly and without attracting the Indians he got quite a little ways when the Indians looked round again they did not notice his moving but as fate would have it they started in his direction and came strait for him Hiram cocked his rifle and resolved to sell his life dearly the Indians came straight onward but when they had got within a few yards of Hiram when they swerved of[f] to the left and went on out of sight among the trees when the east Indian was out of sight Hiram got up and started towards Mountain City creeping along carefully least the Indians would hear him and chase him he we[page break]nt along in this way for an hour at last he got on to the traveled road soon the steeples of Mountain City were plainly visible above the tree tops he danced for joy when he saw the, for he knew he could raise a large force of armed men and chase the Indians he soon raised a lot of men but no trace of the Indians could be found.
