Hiram Dart was a boy who lived in Long Mountains used to the perils and hardships of the frontier he was a strong healthy lad. He owned a rifle and was a crack shot at a bear or any wild animals one day he started out for Mountain City with a load of furs strapped on his back he intended to get get [sic] to Mountain City about night and stay at his friends house over night and start for home in the morning. He got started from home about five oclock in the morning. He had got halfway between home and Mountain City. And was eating his dinner when the well known war whoop of the Cherokee Indians sounded over the mountains he sprang up and bounded of[f] towards [page break] Mountain City he ran as fast as he could along the path bounding over rocks and fallen trees he ran along the path with the swiftness of lightning. After he had gone quite a ways he struck of[f] in to the woods and sank down exausted behind a stump he lay there a good while and at last went to sleep later in the day he woke up and started on he had gone quite a little ways when to his astonishment he saw before him with their backs turned a full a dozen Indian braves what should he do to move he would attract the attention of the Indians he stood there motionless
