The Purpose of This Paper

[First Column]: Even in this modern time of ours there is still to few papers relating to farming, gardening and fruit growing and besides they are to high priced. There ought to be papers that were lower enough in price. That, however poor the farmer, he could offord [afford] to take one, and by taking, and studying it he might be made a wealthy farmer. Now this is the purpose of our paper, in the first place it is very cheap. Second it has many of the best agricultural writers, and third every piece has a valuable hint in it on farming, gardening or fruit growing.

[Second Column]: Now a farming is not a business that many get rich in, and many can get just enough of from their farm to keep them alive it is for their benefit that they should take some farm paper and find out what others have done to be successful and if there is something in which you have been extra successful in raising for several years and you know how you done it just send it in to this paper or some other farm paper that others may profit by your knowledge and live easier. Now as this paper only costs 50 cents all can afford to take it through the year.

Albany Strawberry
and its Culture
___________________

New varieties of strawberries are by no means [gedree?] but new varieties that possess real merit are not often met with. The best one we have seen in several years is the Albany which originated with Mr. Wilson of Pennsylvania. It has many times been exhibited at the agricultural society and every one was attracted by its size and [bidby?]. The Albany like

Most others is hardy though not entirely in our Northern climates, if as far North as N.H. or Maine.

[Second Column]: To make strawberries do the best they should be set out in rows about 21 feet apart and the rows should be of the same width. Then a year from the next fall the should be gone over and all the small vines growing out from the large ones should be cut off then the old ones should be plowed up, and got out of the way, then the ground should be enriched with manure and smoothed down, and then each year the old ones should be plowed up and the new ones to grow in the place where it had been plowed up the year before, in this way the plant are always new, and so bear well. Now another thing every fall before the continued cold weather comes on the plants should be covered with evergreen brush or straw

[Page 5]

[First Column]: to protect them from the cold winter and each spring before the plants begin to grow much this straw or brush should be taken off from them clean.

The Necessity for
Care

Care means a good deal on a farm whether its a poor or good farm there is no difference, and a good many times to be careful in farming is to be a wealthy farmer and one looked upon by his neighbors as an excellent farmer, and care pays far more than the time it takes and here is the proof now lets take a field of corn, an this is one of the things that will do the best with out being taken care of first the seed is planted, we just go along and cover it up then go off and leave it. the corn

[Second Column]: comes up and grows and we say “Oh that will grow all right with out being taken care of, but the weeds grow also, but still the corn ripens and we think we have got a good crop but soon we see our neighbors corn that was the same kind when it was planted, but now how is it his corn. The ear are longer and nicer looking and by inquiring in to the matter we find it was only because his was taken care of and ours wasn’t. Potatoes need care more than most any thing else as when they are left to grow of themselves they grow small and few in a hill, because the weeds choke them out, beans also need a good deal of care, to make them look well as [busy?] grow small and are more liable

[First Column]: rust. By all mean take care of your crops.

The Pearl Bean.

This excellent bean was only introduced to by us last year as a novilty and it still holds that position in our catalogue as it is one of the most wondrous white bean in cultivetion, as a field variety, as it is one of the most prolific bush bean we ever saw. The beans are a little larger than the common red bean and flatter and though not quite so high a priced market bean it will give as much money per acre as any pea bean as it is more prolific than most kinds of pea bed though our Improved pea bean will

[Second Column]: about equal it in productiveness. The Pearl bean is perfectly free from rust as it has not suffered from it on our seed farm. It was first discovered in a field of improved Yellow Eyed Beans and our attention was called to its by its immense productiveness, it was then saved out and planted the next spring when it surpassed all our expectations.
